Stepping Up the Challenge: Matt Riggs’ Trek to Fight Parkinson’s

Imagine standing atop the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, breathtaking views of the Andes stretching wide around you.

Now, picture that same moment, not just as a bucket-list achievement, but as a triumph over adversity.

For our colleague, Matt Riggs, a Senior Finance Officer at CrowdComms, this vision isn’t just a dream; it’s a personal mission.

In September 2025, Matt will take on the iconic challenge of hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

But this is no ordinary trek. Diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s Disease at just 47, Matt is harnessing his determination and the power of the community to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK. His goal? To inspire others, raise awareness, and support groundbreaking research that could one day lead to a cure.

Why Matt is Taking on This Challenge

For Matt, this trek is far more than a physical test. It’s a deeply personal battle against the challenges of Parkinson’s. After years of unexplained symptoms, his diagnosis in March 2024 brought clarity but also a new reality.

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world. It comes with a complex mix of more than 40 motor and non-motor symptoms, affecting everything from movement to memory, balance to mental health. And while medications can help manage symptoms, there is no cure to halt progression.

Matt knows firsthand the devastating impact this condition can have. Yet, he’s using his diagnosis to create a positive purpose—not just for himself, but for the thousands impacted by PD every year.

“I’ve always wanted to complete the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu,” Matt shares. “Now, I can combine the urgency to achieve a personal goal with helping others. This trek gives me a reason to stay active, reframe the negativity of my diagnosis, and inspire others like me to keep striving for what matters.”

The Importance of Supporting Parkinson’s UK

Every hour, someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson’s, and by 2065, the number of people living with the condition is expected to double. Parkinson’s UK plays a pivotal role in this fight, funding innovative research to develop better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

The charity also supports patients and their families, providing critical networks and resources. Matt himself has benefited from a support group for working-age individuals with Parkinson’s, a program made possible by Parkinson’s UK.

“This charity gives hope,” Matt explains. “Your donation isn’t just funding research; it’s helping real people like me access support, live fuller lives, and hold onto faith that a cure is within reach.”

The Charity Challenge of the Trek

The trek itself is no small feat for anyone, but for Matt, it’s a monumental challenge.

The ancient trail spans rugged landscapes, steep ascents, and unpredictable weather, potentially pushing his physical limits. Regular exercise is known to help slow the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms, and this trek has become a motivator for Matt to stay fit and active.

“It won’t be easy,” he admits. “But with every step, I’ll think of the people who’ve supported this cause, and that will keep me going.”

How You Can Help

Matt and his sister, Caroline, will be funding the entire trip themselves, meaning 100% of donations will go directly to Parkinson’s UK. Every pound donated is not just financial support; it’s a message of encouragement, a show of solidarity, and an investment in a brighter future for those living with Parkinson’s.

“Donations remind me that people care, that my cause matters, and that we can make a difference together,” Matt says.

If you’re moved by Matt’s story, there are two ways you can help:
